A Winner! And another Giveaway!

I loved reading all of the fantastic Jane Austen quotes this week! Thank you to everyone who participated in the Austen love-fest here.

Now, before I announce the winner, I will tell you how random and fair this process was. Everyone received one point for commenting, plus an extra point for following this blog and a third point if they posted something about this on Facebook or Twitter. I started at the top, assigned numbers in order, and also counted those who commented on Facebook and Goodreads. I then used the random number generator to generate a random number.

And the random number generator chose as the winner..."Finn and Tracey Family." Congratulations! Please email me your snail mail address at donaldson(dot)julianne(at)gmail.com. Enjoy your copy of Edenbrooke and Becoming Jane!

For the rest of you, this is only WEEK 2! You still have 6 more chances to win!! And just to make you even MORE impatient, I'll tell you a little secret. I'm going to England the week before my book is released. So the final giveaway will be a REAL copy of Edenbrooke (not an ARC) plus a a real, authentic souvenir from England. You'll definitely want to keep coming back.

This week, for the giveaway, all you have to do is name your favorite romantic hero and what book or movie he comes from. If you want to include a picture of him, you can. Let's really enjoy this. Same rules apply: comment here, and get extra points for following and sharing the news.

To start it off, my favorite hero is my hero Philip, from Edenbrooke, for obvious reasons, which you will understand after you read it. And when I like to imagine him, I imagine Jake Gyllenhaal, again, for obvious reasons. (See picture below.)

Now, share your favorite heroes! And the winner of this week's giveaway will win an Advanced Reading Copy of Edenbrooke

plus this romantic movie on DVD:

Ready, set, go!

  1. Well, I have never been a Jake Gyllenhaall fan, even though I'd seen several movies that he'd been in. That all changed once I saw Prince of Persia. Holy Smokes. I won't mind having his face in mind as I read Edenbrooke. As far as favorite romantic hero, that's a hard one as it's been quite a few years since I have been able to do lots of reading. I guess my first romantic hero was probably Uncas from Last of the Mohicans. I remember when I saw the movie I was pretty ticked that they basically meshed Uncas into the character of Hawkeye. Not that DDL wasn't good in the role, I was just upset they rearranged the story. So I hope when Edenbrooke gets turned into a screenplay they don't do the same thing to it!

    1. Same with me! Prince of Persia was my conversion. I have never seen Last of the Mohicans, or read the book! How shameful is that? I should put it on my list.

    2. You really should. I also loved "The Spy" by James Fenimore Cooper. It's all a bit wordy, but once you get in there, you'll love it. Alas, Last of the Mohicans was rated R for, if I recall, all the Indian warfare. They tend to give you a R rating when you scalp people and drink their blood!

  2. Booth from Bones. :)

And congrats on going to England the week before your release date! Such fabulously exciting things right next to each other! I'm so excited for you.

    1. I've never watched Bones! Maybe I'll have to check it out. :)

    2. Ooooo, good choice! Booth ranks right up there with me, too.

  3. Can I do both book and movie? It's too hard to choose.

Book: Mr. Rochester. He is smokin' plus behind that hard exterior, you find a genuinely good person...and he is the only person who could ever deserve Jane.

Movie: Westley from The Princess Bride. Because the words "as you wish" will always make me think of him.

    1. Okay, I love that you chose Mr. Rochester! And Wesley is such a great hero. I just watched that movie last weekend with my kids.

  4. I love him so much. And because you love him too, I love you more!

    1. Oh, I know how much you love Jake. I was in the theater with you when we watched Prince of Persia, and I don't know who was squealing louder than you!

  5. I will have to go with Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables. For years and years it has been my favorite book and movie. He said to Anne: "I've loved you as long as I can remember." I went through a phase in my college years where I just loved Gilbert and everything about Anne of Green Gables!

  6. My favorite is Mr. Knightley ... but Gilbert Blythe is a very close second!! Love that you said that, Kristin:) I found your blog from Kristin, and I'm excited to read your book ... sounds like it's just up my alley!

    1. I LOVE Mr. Knightley!!! And Gilbert too, of course. Long-time friends turned lovers. What a great theme.

  7. I have discussed this with you before, but I have a thing for misunderstood bad boys. So, I MUST go with Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice and John Thornton from North and South. If you tied me down and forced me to pick one over the other, I'd probably go with John Thornton (by a hair) because of the way he looks at Margaret in the train station at the end. (((Swoon))) More recently I have taken a liking to Matthew from Downton Abbey. And of course, I've always had a thing for Faramir from The Lord of the Rings. You only know he's a romantic figure if you've read the books or seen the extended versions of the movies, but I love him like no other.

    1. Oh, John Thornton. He makes my heart seize. I love the train station scene--yes!--but I also love when he's talking to his mother about proposing to Margaret, and he is sure she does not love him, and he's about to cry because he feels so much for her. AND I love when she's leaving and he stands on the steps and says, "Look back. Look back at me!" *sigh* Good stuff.

  8. I'm with Melissa on John Thornton... good grief :)

  9. Oh so many! I love all the ones everyone else has mentioned, but my all-time favorite is either Frederick Bhaer from Little Women (he's so sweet and smart and courageous) or Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. He's so overcome with love for Elizabeth! Sigh! I can't choose.

    1. I love Little Women! And Colin Firth's love for Elizabeth is one of his best qualities. He tries to master it, but there it is, again and again.

  10. OK, so I must admit, I'm not an "Anne of Greene Gables" type (though I read the books when I was little. Great reads, but for some reason, I get disinterested when white aprons, bonnets, and peti skirts are the fashion.) Anyways, that said, my ALL TIME favorite romantic hero is Flyn Rider from Tangled. How could he not be everyone's favorite?? Totally stole my heart when he cut Rapunzle's hair. Love him love him LOVE him!!

    1. I love Tangled so much! The first time I watched it, I cried when they said that they are each other's new dream. And when he cut her hair! So brave! So noble! Good choice, Erika!

  13. All the ones listed our favs of mine, so I'm going to be different and post my most recent favs...from another LDS author who writes love stories from historical eras: The Highwayman (the Highwayman of Tanglewood), Tom Evans (The Windslept Flame), Slater Evans (Weathered too Young), and Ransom Lake (Visions of Ransom Lake)all by Marcia Lynn McClure. She's kind of a "read one you've read them all" one formula author...but she's pretty good none-the-less and her books have gotten me through this pregnancy!! HA! I of course follow your blog, commented here and posted on Facebook!

  14. My all-time favorite is Arthur Clennam, as portrayed by Matthew Macfadyen, in Charles Dickens' Little Dorrit. (You can rent the mini-series on Netflix.) Mr. Clennam is the quintessential honorable gentleman who somehow manages to keep a good heart in spite of his mother's very cold one. But in a close second, like The Savvy Sage, I, too, love Faramir from The Lord of The Rings books.

I am a follower of your blog, and am posting a link of this page to my facebook. (^_^)

  15. Peeta Mellark. Need I say more? I guess since these books are among the only few I have read in years, they're on my mind. But I think Peeta fits the bill perfectly for an amazing hero.

    1. I have loved Peeta from the very beginning, when he looked like he had been crying after saying goodbye to his family. And he just got better and better...until he tried to kill Katniss...many times. But we'll forgive him for that, since Suzanne Collins apparently lost her good sense when writing Mockingjay. But yes. Team Peeta all the way!

  16. Top Three Heroes:

Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables: so patient, so kind, so good.

Colonel Brandon from Sense and Sensibility: Always ready to assist Marianne Dashwood, despite the possibility of continuous rejection. Ever the gentlemen, ever faithful.

Jean ValJean from Les Miserables: First of all, I read this book nearly every year and I own three different abridged copies. He is the ultimate hero, proof that good overcomes evil, the next generation is precious, and redemption comes to all who seek it.

Love ya Julie! Can't wait to get my copy of your book, whether through your drawing, or Amazon. ;)

  17. Great picks, Diane! I was surprised by Jean ValJean, but of course, he's the ultimate hero, although his story, I think, is a sad one. He's kind of a Christ-hero, in my mind, because he gives up everything for those he loves, and they don't really appreciate him. I am sure there are entire college classes taught on Les Miserables...now that I'm thinking of it, I would love to study that book in depth in a college class. One more thing to add to my bucket list.

  18. I love Peeta from The Hunger Games! He is so selfish, strong, and caring.

  19. Peeta is so noble. I love how he's willing to sacrifice everything, over and over again, and how he can always be counted on to do the right thing for the right reason.

  21. Oh my goodness! What a difficult question to answer . . . I fall in love with just about every hero from whatever book I'm currently reading. I love it when they have a wicked sense of humor and can laugh at themselves. But the one guy I've crushed on and absolutely adored since I was eight years old is Gilbert Blythe, as played by Jonathon Crombie. Lovely sigh.

  22. Another vote for Gilbert! What a good guy.
